Which is Good for Children’s Height? Soy Milk vs Cow Milk

Height is an important indicator of overall child health. Milk is a reliable source of protein and fat for growth in early childhood.

According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, out of 5 thousand three-year-old children who drink three cups of non-cow’s milk every day, half an inch shorter than children who drink the same amount of cow’s milk. Research leader, Jonathon Maguire of St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto did not dismiss if these children might have differences in eating patterns. But the nutritional content of milk is sufficient to meet their nutrition.

Head of Medical Kalbe Nutritionals Dr. Muliaman Mansyur added, milk derived from cow’s milk is still a good source of protein for children. Therefore, cow’s milk is often the choice as a source of protein and fat in the child’s growing period.

“The content of protein, calcium vitamin D and other minerals for bone growth has been proven to be a correlation between routine drinking with a child’s height,” Dr. Muliaman told detikHealth recently.

However, continued Dr. Muliaman, not with some children who are allergic to cow’s milk because of an allergy to lactose, which is the main carbohydrate in cow’s milk. Therefore, the alternative is milk containing amino acids or extensive hydrolized milk.

“But because it is very expensive and difficult to obtain and also usually will be used long term, then the alternative is soy milk,” he said.

According to Dr. Muliaman, soy milk both in terms of safety and its benefits to the growth and development of children has also been proven. In America and Japan the use of soy milk has been long and clinically tested.

“Soya milk that is used is not ordinary soy, but is isolate of soy protein. So that the content in soy milk produced is of the same quality as cow’s milk, now there is milk technology by adding essential amino acids to soy milk,” said Dr. Muliaman.

Dr. Muliaman explained, some amino acids that are not present in soy, such as methionine, cysteine, taurine and karniyin do fortification in addition to calcium, vitamin D and other vitamin minerals are needed for children’s growth and development.

“Currently, this soy protein isolate milk should indeed be equivalent to cow’s milk. So allergic children do not need to be afraid of being left behind in growing and developing because it has been fortified earlier,” he said.

Morinaga has an Allergy Solution series specifically for children who experience cow protein intolerance, namely Chil Kid Soya and Chil School Soya.
