Many Children Addicted to Gadgets, Instagram Social Media Worst For Mental Health

JiwaCisarua Hospital, West Java reported that they handled hundreds of children patients aged 7-15 years who suffered from gadget addiction disorders.
“There are teenagers who watch YouTube all day until psychological symptoms appear,” said the child and adolescent mental health specialist, Dr. Lina Budiyanti, told AFP.
Though gadget addiction can have a bad impact on the physical and mental condition of children. The easy access of children to technology and the internet makes them so addicted to gadgets that they can experience mental problems.
Research by the Royal Society for Public Health in the UK studied 1,500 people aged 14-24 to see which social media made them feel calmer. Some social media platforms that are used as benchmarks are Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Snapchat.
The study studied how respondents felt through pictures or photos on social media and their impact on mental health. Based on these studies, Instagram is rated the worst for mental health, followed by Snapchat in second place.
“It’s very interesting to see Instagram and Snapchat as the worst social health for mental health. Both of these applications seem to encourage feelings of anxiety in young people,” said Dr. Becky Inkster, a researcher at the University of Cambridge.
Currently, the researchers want action from the government and social media companies to campaign wisely using social media while mitigating the negative potential that can arise from the platform.
