South Korea uses 5G technology to check for COVID-19 at airports

South Korea says it has introduced mobile edge computing (MEC) technology at Incheon International Airport to operate artificial intelligence (AI) systems that screen potentially COVID-19 patients as a measure to improve pandemic prevention measures.
South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT, quoted by Yonhap on Friday, said the system would check passengers without masks or with symptoms of COVID-19, such as high temperatures, in arrival and departure halls. The system can also send autonomous robots for disinfection.
The ministry said the system also incorporates MEC technology, which minimizes latency by sending data to the nearest small-scale data center, not a centralized data center.
South Korea's largest telecommunications operator, SK Telecom, has installed a 5G (mmWave) base station at the airport to operate the service, which will also use the company's new AI chip, SAPEON X220.
South Korea's ICT ministry said it would support more MEC-based 5G services, by spending 120 billion won on projects using the technology through 2022.
While 5G users have reached about 10 million in South Korea, since the commercialization of that latest generation network in April last year, the country is in the early stages of launching a mmWave 5G service that makes full use of high speed and low latency.
SK Telecom's rival operator, LG Uplus, is currently testing the MMWave 5G at the Kumoh National Institute of Technology in Gumi, about 200 kilometres south of Seoul.
